Dr. Hung-mao Tien, President of the Institute for National Policy Research, received the Delegation of Academics from Stanford University, led by Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, Director of the U.S.-Asia Security Initiative at the Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, and discussed matters of mutual concern on March 20th, 2019 in a close-door meeting.

President Tien expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Eikenberry for his attendance to the 2018 Asia-Pacific Think-tank Summit, sponsored by INPR last October and welcomed for the future exchanges and cooperation between INPR and SAPRC. Ambassador Eikenberry, aside from sharing the observation and reflections of the visit, briefed the Annual Workshop of Shorenstein APARC U.S.-Asia Security Initiative on Monitoring the Cross-Strait Balance, held earlier this month in Stanford University.

Topics in the meeting focused on rapidly evolving security situation in the Indo-Pacific region and Taiwan’s challenges imposed by the growing “sharp power” of the People’s Republic of China in the international society. Both President Tien and Ambassador Eikenberry agreed that Taiwan and the United States, based on the common values of freedom and democracy and goal for peace and security, should maximize their capability and cooperation so as to deter threats to regional stability.
